The Lifelong Benefits Of A Lean Body

People in the know understand that a lean body is much more than just a sexy body on the beach in a skimpy bikini or spandex swimming trunks. A trim body is a healthy body reducing injuries, healing faster and aging more gracefully. With the right mindset and lifestyle, anyone can have one of these slender, supple and smooth running machines.

Lean Body Benefits

Even the Mayo Clinic researchers realize a lean body is beneficial. People with a lower percent of body fat have fewer injuries as the muscles act like shock absorbers protecting the skeleton and vital organs. Patients recuperate sooner from falls or surgery as the body’s metabolism and systems operate efficiently. Tests have proven leaner people have less risk of coronary artery disease. As people age, they lose muscle. These researchers discovered people lose a half a pound of muscle a year starting at the age of 30.

Understanding A Lean Body

Basically, this body is a body with reduced amounts of stored fat. Female and male bodies are built differently; women normally carry more fat than males. Therefore women with a rating of 15 to 20% of fat are considered lean while those in the 20 to 25% category are considered normal. For men a lean body rating is between 8 to 12% fat whereas a reading of 13 to 19% is normal.

How To Calculate Lean Body Mass

Four different methods are used to calculate lean body mass. Accurate analysis requires complicated equipment while handheld devices are inexpensive and easy to use. A nonscientific home test is to pinch the skin at the waist; more than half an inch indicates a surplus of body fat. The most accurate method to calculate lean body mass is hydrostatic weighting which done in a pool and measures displaced water. Measuring displaced air in a Bod Pod, an egg shaped cylinder, allows a person to remain dry while standing in the chamber for 5 to 8 minutes. Handheld devices called skin calipers calculate the amount of insulating fat below the skin surface.

Exercising For A Lean Body

A lean body workout is simply muscle building strength training followed by aerobic exercise to increase heart rate. Strength training is done with weights, smooth, controlled movements and repetitions. By exercising all of the major muscle groups, thighs, hamstrings, glutes, back, chest, shoulders, arms and abdominal, the enthusiastic exerciser is on his or her way to a healthy, lean body.

A trim body contributes much more than just good looks to its owner and his or her lifestyle. This wonderful, well tuned machine has fewer injuries, recovers faster from accidents and surgeries and slows down the normal aging process. With exercise and weight control, every body can be a lean body.

A simple BMI Calculator for Women equation is available and can be done anywhere. This formula requires dividing the weight by height in inches and dividing that result by the height in inches again.
